Tomato and Mozzarella

Tomato, this is a food that I have not been friends with in the past but wanted to prove to myself that I could try it.  There is so much made with tomato or things with tomato added in and it seems to take on several different textures and tastes.  I actually tried a raw tomato with mozzarella with a bit of olive oil and salt and pepper because this is a dish I have seen often where I would like to order the mozzarella cheese but the tomato has always scared me away.  My impression of the raw tomato is that it is extremely wet and gooey.  There is a little bit of crunch on the outside and the seeds are surrounded by the more gooey part.  So a few different textures going on which I am not a huge fan of.  The taste itself is also weird and tart.  It really is very wet and the juice kind of pools underneath the tomato and gets on the mozzarella and kind of saturates into it when you put them together.  So most of all I react to the really wet texture and tart taste and am surprised at how different is tastes from other tomato based things.  It does not taste like the tomato soup or other tomato sauce on pizza.  It is crazy to me that these are all from the same fruit/vegetable.  I think tomato is now considered a fruit?  So my first impression is I am still not a huge fan of tomato but will try and still keep an open mind.  But most importantly I was able to try it and take a bite of it so if it does come up in other dishes I will be able to deal with it even if I don’t prefer it.

  1. This is one that is weird for me as well. I love tomato sauce, especially the creamy Sunday sauce and can even eat marinara which is chunkier tomato sauce. But when the tomatoes are not cooked, I have trouble eating them. So you’re not alone in this one! I find out something that is cooked and whether or not it’s cooked it all really makes a big difference in food.
